Borrowing from Other Libraries: Home

Learn about your options to borrow materials from other libraries.

Welcome to Interlibrary Loan!

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that obtains articles, books and other material from libraries throughout Michigan and the U.S, and even from other countries.  Looking for a book or article that we don't have?  No problem!  Place an ILL request for the item and we will obtain it from another library for you, free of charge.

Interlibrary Loan is available for all current SAU students, staff, and faculty.

ILL: Where to start

Books and Ebooks

Where to find and request books:

  • WorldCat.   Search the SAU Library and libraries throughout the world.  Ebooks are delivered via email.  Print books can be picked up and returned at the SAU White Library. (Options for online and distance students)
  • MeLCat.  Borrow print books, CDs, and DVDs from libraries throughout Michigan.  Pick up and return borrowed material at the SAU White Library.

Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed Articles

Where to find and request peer-reviewed, scholarly articles and everything else.

  • Research Databases.  The library subscribes to a variety of research databases.  We have them organized in an A-Z list and also by subject.

ILL: Order and Delivery Times

Order and delivery times:

  • Articles are delivered via email in 1-5 business days, although harder-to-find items may take a bit longer.
  • Books take about 5-10 business days to arrive.
    • Main campus students and faculty:  You will be notified by email when your book request arrives.  Pick-up at the library Circulation Desk.
    • Distance/online students.  Print books may be ordered through ILL if you are able to pick-up and return the material at the SAU main campus.  Don't live near campus?  Ebooks and book chapters, which can be delivered quickly via email, are great alternatives.  Additionally, we are happy to mail SAU-owned print books to your home address.
      • Tip for Michigan residents: Use MeLCat to request books and have them delivered your local public library.  Check the list of over 400 MI libraries to see if your local library participates in MeL.
  • Ebooks are delivered by email and take 1-5 business days to arrive.  Due to publisher restrictions placed on libraries, many ebooks are not available through ILL.  Staff will contact you by email with available options if the entire ebook cannot be borrowed through ILL.

Check on the status of your requests at My Account (anytime) or by contacting the Interlibrary Loan Department:  or  517-750-6439 (M-F, 9am -5pm)

What if I can't wait?

We do our very best to obtain items as quickly as we can.  However, there is not a way to fast-track or rush an Interlibrary Loan request.

Don't have time to wait for Interlibrary Loan items to arrive?

The best thing to do is to contact a librarian.  Let us know your research topic, any assignment details, and your deadline date and time.  Librarians can point you in the direction of research materials that are available immediately.
