More about Interlibrary Loan

What is available through Interlibrary Loan?

Print books, copies of book chapters, and copies of articles are the most common items obtained through Interlibrary Loan.

What is NOT available through Interlibrary Loan?

Items that are not available or difficult to obtain through Interlibrary Loan include textbooks, ebooks, recently published books, entire issues & volumes of periodicals, digital videos and movies, vinyl records, maps, old formats such as microfilm, reference books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias, and dissertations and theses.

United States Copyright Law may limit how much you can request from a single book or journal title.

More on textbooks:

The library does not borrow required textbooks through Interlibrary Loan.  Textbooks are difficult to obtain through Interlibrary Loan, and we usually cannot keep another library's book for an entire semester.  Non-textbook items such as suggested reading listed in courses may be requested through ILL.

How to check on the status of your request

Check on the status of your requests at My Account (anytime) or by contacting the Interlibrary Loan Department: sauill@arbor.edu  or  517-750-6439 (M-F, 9am -5pm)

Due dates

Due dates are set by the lending library and vary by institution.  A typical loan period for an ILL book is 4-6 weeks.  You can check the due date for your Interlibrary Loan items by logging into My Account.

Due date renewals

Interlibrary Loan items can be renewed by logging into My Account and selecting the blue "Renew Items" button.  ILL items can typically be renewed for 3-4 weeks, but not all ILL items are renewable.

Late fees

There are no daily overdue fines for Interlibrary Loan items.  A standard $100 replacement fee and a non-refundable $5.00 processing fee are added to Interlibrary Loan items that are lost or more than one month overdue.  See our complete library billing policies.
